Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Best Estimated Prophet/Best Show

For a long time I've been trying to come up with a list of my top 10 favorite shows ever (a desert island kind of thing that spands all years). Some how I have to get Estimated Prophet in there - one of my favorite songs. It's really hard considering most of the really great shows happened in '74 or earlier (before Estimated).

So, what really good show contains an Estimated?

The best I can think of are 12/26/79 and 9/10/91, but I think there can be better.

Give this one a listen. Overall, this version is rather sloppy, but the main solo (though short) is very hot. I was there and it floored us all. http://archive.org/details/gd1987-08-13.nak100.pasternak.81988.sbeok.flac16
And Jerry plays a similar solo a month later on Jack Straw here: http://archive.org/details/gd87-09-09.sony.dnc.8598.sbeok.shnf
Unfortunately, sound quality for both these shows is pretty poor. The overall 'best' version of Estimated is most certainly in 1977. And as for best whole show, I think that's very subjective: I'm partial to 80-85, and most would disagree with me here...Peace, Harper

only a few here would disagree but they were too close to the speakers in the 60's and 70's - so what do they know?? ;)

The Estimated from 10/12/81 is very loose and jammed. I say that in the face of excellent versions from '77 (they played Estimated in all but one show that year). So, have fun.

Is '77 overrated? Well that is not the topic here. I know that is the benchmark many shows are measured against.

I don't know how you could pick a best show, really, from the GD. I mean put on a show from '74 and compare it to '79.
Put on a great set list from post '86 and compare it to the playing of '82-'85.

Anyway....you get the idea.

I really like 2/26/77

I don't know how the Estimated stacks up against those shows you mentioned though...

What are your top 10 shows so far?

So far...

1/22/68
6/24/70
5/26/72 (I may want to change this to 8/22/72 or 9/21/72)
11/11/73
6/23/74
9/28/75
10/14/94

I'd need something from '76-'78 and something from the early '80s.

Agree with Stratocaster about including 4/19/82--IMO the best Estimated ever, given that it's the only one that's ever reprised the main theme after the jam, plus Bobby's really into it...

...BUT if you want a top-shelf Estimated, that features Jerry totally zoned into the space-wahwah-jam vibe, AND one of the greatest (actually, THE greatest IMHO ;-) shows of all time, look no further than 10/29/77.

(Go for the Estimated, but make sure you stay for the EYES...not to mention the rest of the brilliant 2nd set.)

agree that 77-10-29 is greatest in a zen kinda way
http://archive.org/details/gd1977-10-29.sbd.miller.92085.sbeok.flac16

however if you r looking for a long, spaced out rocker this is the 1 http://archive.org/details/gd81-10-12.sbd.macdonald.7916.sbeok.shnf

this is the longest version ever (as far as i know) and a part of 1 of the longest dead shows in the 80s

My favorite estimateds are all on commercial releases, I'm afraid:

11-2-77 (go Canada!), 10-16-77
behind those: 5-28-77, 6-7-77, 6-8-77, 6-9-77
My top non-commercial release: 5-18-77

Truth in advertising: I judge estimateds based almost entirely on how harmonically ambitious Jerry is in his solos. My feeling is that he grew more and more comfortable with the closing jam through the Spring tour, which is why my favorites are grouped towards the end of the tour. Then in those two Fall shows (and perhaps others that just haven't stuck in my mind), he started getting really wild. In the 11-2-77 version, it's almost like he's speaking in tongues through his guitar.

EDIT: Thinking in terms of the overall show, 5-28-77 would certainly be in my top ten, and 6-9-77 and 10-16-77 are also both highly regarded.

I agree about 11-2. Downright hypnotic end section.

I agree that Estimated got much better by fall 77, as Jerry's solos become increasingly hypnotic. My favorite versions of the year are easily the ones in November 77.

It's interesting that all your favorite Estimateds are from 1977 - I guess you like relatively concise versions? I think the middle jam gets stronger & more satisfying in later years (though this is somewhat balanced out by Weir's singing getting more annoying...)

Admittedly, my interest tails off pretty dramatically across the board after 1977. I've heard some 1978 estimateds, but none have stuck in my mind. Thanks for the link.

9/3/77 is the one that showed me the light in regards to what the possibilities for this song could be!!

An of course, an all-around incredible show too.
